Ethics of Ambience — figure beneath a spiraling skylight

Abstract

Ambient Intelligence is a domain of research into novel approaches to building and using technology that is responsive in its interactions with us, according to our needs, moods, tastes. There are various approaches to what ambient intelligence is. It is a vast spectrum of ‘cross-modal’ and sensory technologies, the specific nature of which depends on the goals of the particular research lab or/and industry. This spectrum and the ideologies that drive the various forms and meanings of ambient intelligence are explored here, and the ethical issues that each raises is considered. The discussion raises the need for ethical guidelines to handle the social pervasiveness of this technology.
